Mama cloth is a catch-all phrase for reusable cloth pads that can be used either for postpartum bleeding or for our monthly periods. There can be a lot of reasons why the feminine products we buy at the store just don’t work for us; whether it’s the shape, absorbancy, feel of the materials, or the chemicals that are used in production and in the pads and tampons themselves. I first tried mama cloth postpartum after the birth of my daughter, when I developed a rash; my skin stinging and burning from using the disposable pads night and day, day in and day out, for weeks on end. My OB/GYN told me it was likely the lack of breathability and the chemicals in the pads. I headed out to my local cloth diapering store and picked up five pads in two sizes and the rest is history.
The new design maximizes absorbancy while keeping the pads thin for comfort and discretion. The top layer, which sits against the skin, is 100% cotton flannel. Flannel pulls the moisture away from the body and into the pad, and doesn’t have that wet feel like disposable pads do. The bottom or outer layer, is a waterproof 2 ml PUL (poly-urethane-lined fabric). The middle layer is super-absorbant Zorb, which is a bamboo/cotton/viscose/micro-fiber blend. The pads have a snap on the wing to keep it in place. They can be machine washed and thrown in the dryer just like cloth diapers. Bleach should not be used on the pads as it may degrade the fabrics. I like to throw mine on the shower floor while I take a shower and let them rinse out before I put them in the wash, which virtually eliminates staining.
I’ve made the pads in 4 sizes. The extra large (XL) post-partum pad is 14” long and is great for very heavy days and overnights. The large (L) overnight pad is 12” long. The medium (M) pad is 10” long and is an everyday pad for medium to heavy days. The small (S) pad is 8“ long and is for medium to light days. Each pack comes with one pad in each size in a variety of super-cute prints.
I am sure you will be converted to cloth pads if you give it a try.
